• Lot 180: Cristo Crucificado, Juan Miguel Herrera, new Mexico: New Mexican carved wood bulto, "cristo crucifixado", c. 1870-80, by famed sinter Juan Miguel Herrera (1835-1905), carved aspen wood in a gesso and polychrome finish, the simple wooden cross joined by a single iron pin surmounted by a simple titulum, the Latin letters inri banded with red on a white ground, the tender and benevolent face of the crucified Christ with downcast eyes, outstretched arms with trails of blood on a pale white ground, raw hide loin cloth, attenuated and knee caps soaked in blood extremities of limbs fastened by wood pins, a true masterpiece of southwest ecclesiastical art, similar crucifixes found in the Santa Fe museum of art and certain missions, extremely scarce to the market, new Mexico (arroyo Honda), overall: 52"h, 31"w, 10"d, corpus: 29"l, 29"w , 5lbs**note: purchased from Santa Fe, nm, august 2006, for $35,590. 00* copy of receipt available upon request*
• Lot 183: Death Cart Figure , Cruz Esteban Lopez, New Mexico: “Dona Sebastiana,” by cruz esteban lopez, a magnificent life-size modern re-interpretation of an 18th c. New Mexican processional death cart, the figure beautifully carved, interpreted out of gnarled cottonwood, suggesting bone ligatures, the carved wooden skull adorned with horse hair, the eye sockets filled with mica, the rib cage being of one solid piece, the cart cleverly constructed of pickets, wheels being from solid log rounds, the ensemble includes a bow, arrow, sickle, and the death figure, another example by the artist found in the Albuquerque museum, similar examples exhibited at the Smithsonian and other museums, the piece comes with a book full of notes and photos from the artist, 72. 5", 85", 44"
