This original set, whose images are taken from drawings by Cecil Aldin is entitled "Dogs of the World" and was issued in the United Kingdom in 1912 for Cope's Cigarettes. The set features rare and more popular breeds of that time. Some of the breeds illustrated are as follows....Old English Sheepdog,Maltese,French Poodle,Borzoi,Dogue de Bordeaux,English Mastiff,Great Dane,Schipperke,Irish Wolfhound,Bulldog,Chow Chow,Welsh Terrier,Pekingese,Basset Hound,Japanese Chin,Dachshund,Skye Terrier,Saint Bernard,Smooth Fox Terrier,Otterhound,Deerhound,Italian Greyhound,Irish Setter,Irish Terrier and Curly Coated Retriever.
Each card has printed text on the reverse relating to the breed pictured and the following is for the Dachshund....."The Dachshund is a breed of great antiquity, its origin being altogether unknown, though the modern variety is essentially a German dog.It is a sporting dog, used for hunting rabbits and hares, and tracking wounded animals. It is a short-coated, long-backed dog,on very short legs, and is about 20 lbs weight. The colour most in fashion is the fallow, red, and black and tan."
Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin RBA lived between 1870 and 1935 and is described on the cards as "the most celebrated modern painter of Horses and Dogs".He was very well known for the many books he illustrated including "Just among Friends" and "Pages from My Sketch Books" but little if anything has been written about this set of 50 cards and is very seldom mentioned.
