News-Antique.com - Jan 19,2009 - Garth’s Auctions Announces Changes Toward Sustainable Living
Delaware, Ohio- January 1, 2009- The staff at Garth’s Auctions is beginning the New Year with a head-start on a company-wide resolution: a company wide effort to improve their carbon footprint. Garth’s initial efforts toward “going green” have included a move to utilizing paper certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council for printed materials and a new format for the full-color catalogs that makes more efficient use of the printing process – up to 50% more efficiency per catalog. When these changes were implemented in late fall, the entire staff began to brainstorm for other opportunities to improve their ecological friendliness.
“As a company, and an industry, much effort is put toward historic preservation, of course” explains co-owner and Vice President, Amelia Jeffers. “We see efforts toward ecologic preservation as a natural extension. I believe in the opportunity to position antiques and art as a more ecologically friendly alternative to modern, mass-produced materials. But, if we have any chance of selling that concept to new collectors, we need to walk the talk. So, we are serious about our commitments to “greening” up!
Additional efforts embraced by the Garth’s staff in recent months have included a company wide recycling program, the elimination of disposable cups the employee break area, and other adjustments such as programmable temperature control throughout the entire facility. In addition, Garth’s sale force will begin the transition to hybrid vehicles with the first one purchased in January, 2009.
“Jeff [Jeffers, President of Garth's] has identified a myriad of other, cutting-edge products that we will be considering as we update an replace equipment and facilities,” continues Jeffers. “One innovative product collects used water from the bathroom sink and stores it for use in flushing the toilet in the same space. It has the potential to save a family of four, 12,000 gallons of water per year. Imagine what we will achieve with our family of 17!”
“Our industry consumes an unimaginable amount of paper annually, purely out of necessity. We are encouraging our clients, whenever possible, to take delivery of their printed materials digitally,” adds Jeffers. “To that end, you will see some exciting developments on our website this year. We will really be pushing an online presence.”
