BOSTON- Twenty compelling works by American artist John Swan (born 1948), are exclusively available through Stephen O’Brien Jr. Fine Arts, LLC. The sale will run from October 22, 2008- January 1, 2008 at 268 Newbury Street, Boston, Massachusetts. The exhibition features a wide variety of Swan’s work, including but not limited to, sporting art, landscape scenery and subject portraits.
After studying art at the University of New Hampshire, Swan’s career officially began when he painted his two sons and rural down east landscapes. Drawing inspiration from both the Bahamas and Canada’s Gaspe Peninsula, much of Swan’s work is created on location. Critics and the everyday art enthusiast have not failed to appreciate Swan’s skill, as he’s won such prizes such as the 1987 Ducks Unlimited International Artist of the Year Award and has been a three time recipient of the Atlantic Salmon Federation Artist of the Year.
Additionally, Swan’s work has been featured in such publications as Gray’s Sporting Journal, Esquire Sportsman and Wildlife Art. His illustrations have appeared in multiple books, including Joseph Bate’s Atlantic Salmon Fishing and Thomas McGuane’s Live Water anthology.
Having gained the prestige of one of America’s foremost sporting and wildlife artists, Swan is equally skilled in the medium of watercolor and oils. Watercolors such as Two Boys and On the Beach showcase Swan’s ability to capture the fluidity and the animation of his human subjects, while simultaneously depicting the beauty of nature. Additionally, sporting paintings such as Bonefishing and Early Autumn Salmon are prime examples of Swan’s keen eye for light, shadows, and color gradation.
Landscape paintings such as Two Crows capture the beauty of simplicity. However, Swan does not diminish the understated elegance of the snowy countryside. Stephen O’Brien Fine Arts is proud to showcase Swan’s works, as his refreshing and eye-catching works are an essential part of the development and progression of sporting and wildlife art.
