[Hong Kong, 10 April 2008] -- The third day of Sotheby’s Spring 2008 Hong Kong sales series at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which included a various-owners sale of Important Watches; a single-owner collection of Wristwatches, The Legacy of a Collector; and Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite, totaled HK$369,693,749 (US$47,483,465).
Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite
The sale of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite brought HK$295,833,750 (US$37,996,887). Highlighting the sale was a Highly Important D-Colour and Internally Flawless
Diamond Necklace that achieves this pinnacle of diamond perfection, which sold for HK$42,237,500 / US$5,436,544 to an Anonymous buyer (lot 2225, est. HK$26/33 million / US$3.3/4.2 million*). This meticulous piece of jewellery comprises 43 matching pear-shaped diamonds, totalling 91.02 carats. Each diamond in this timeless piece was graded as DIF (D-colour and Internally Flawless) by the esteemed Gemological Institute of America (GIA) – denoting they are fine examples of the highest quality diamonds available.
Leading the selection of coloured diamonds was a Very Fine Fancy Intense Pink Diamond, Yellow Diamond and Diamond Ring, weighing 4.45 carats, which achieved HK$15,671,500 / US$2,012,847, selling to the International Trade (lot 2071, est. HK$14/18 million / US$1.8/2.3 million), followed by an Important Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond and Diamond Ring, the yellow diamond weighing 13.11 carats, which brought HK$12,423,500 / US$1,595,674, selling to an Asian Private Collector, far exceeding its high estimate (lot 2222, est. HK$7 million / US$897,435).
Topping the offering of jade and jadeite was a Magnificent Jadeite Bangle of highly translucent saturated imperial green colour, which has a much desirable thickness and width of 7.50mm and 14.05mm, respectively, that fetched HK$11,527,600, selling to an Asian Private Collector (US$1,480,592) (lot 2206, est. HK$10/15 million / US$1.3/1.9 million).
Quek Chin Yeow, Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia and Head of the Hong Kong Jewellery Department, said: “We’re very pleased with the strong prices achieved for a number of the highlights of today’s sale, particularly for the diamond necklace, some coloured diamonds and the jadeite bangle.”
The 72.22 carat pear-shaped D-colour flawless diamond was successfully sold privately after the auction for an undisclosed sum.

The sales of Watches today totalled HK$73,860,000 (US$9,486,578): Important Watches brought HK$38,134,500 (US$4,897,995), against a presale estimate of HK$34,428,000/46,652,000 (US$4,413,000/5,981,000), while The Legacy of a Collector
