Jason Preston, Specialist Head of Sale for 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art, comments, “We are delighted with the results of today's sale, especially with the strong prices realized by the 41 lots from the Estate of Leona M. Helmsley, which totaled $1,638,325, and nearly doubled the pre-sale estimate for the group. Leading the Helmsley Collection was a pair of fine lacquered commodes, by Henry Dasson and formerly in the Collection of King George V and Queen Mary, which fetched $421,000. A highlight from the various owners section of today's sale is the fine Roman micromosaic table which realized $325,000.” Melissa Bennie, Specialist Head of Sale for 19th Century Ceramics and Glass continued, “The exceptional price of $229,000 achieved for the pair of Minton Exhibition vases designed by Carrier-Belluese, underscores the continuing demand of international private collectors for quality 19th century exhibition masterworks. Collectors also showed a renewed interest in fine dining, as demonstrated by the spirited bidding for sets of plates and dinnerwares throughout the sale.”
