Litchfield County Auctions holds highly anticipated Modern Art and Design Auction on iGavel.com Highlights Include Works by Marc Chagall, Paul Jenkins, and Art Owned by Diane Sawyer
Closing April 9th on iGavel.com
News-Antique.com - Mar 28,2008 - NEW YORK, NY – March 28, 2008 – Litchfield County Auction’s kicked off its Modern Art and Design Auction Wednesday on iGavel.com, the online fine art and antiques auction house. With works by important artists, from Marc Chagall to Paul Jenkins, and art owned by ABC News journalist Diane Sawyer and her husband, film director, Mike Nichols, the auction promises to be one of the year’s most exciting Modernism sales. LCA is hoping to exceed their 2007 April Auction that sold over a million dollars worth of Art, Furniture & Decorations.
The sale includes over 400 lots from East Coast estates and collections, among them the Mar A Lago home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, daughter of General Foods, Inc. founder C.W. Post. And in addition to the artists noted earlier, the auction features works by Asger Jorn, Joan Miro, and a signature piece by Enrico Donati, entitled ‘Etrusque’ 1945 which is estimated at $25,000-35,000. There are two very large and important works by Paul Jenkins from his Phenomena series, each estimated to bring $15,000-25,000 and two equally large and important paintings by Robert Natkins, one inscribed to “Dale” the Palm Beach Gardens collector. Four paintings by Pater Max, whose work Litchfield sold for record prices back in November 2007, are also live. A fun drawing by Marino Marini comes from the estate of John Douglas Hohnsbeen, friend and curator of Peggy Guggenheim's Venice Art Collection, and long time partner of Architect Philip Johnson, famous for his glass house in New Canaan, CT. And sculpture collectors will not be disappointed. A number of important works are up for bid, including a Hugo Robus bronze sculpture (estimated at $15,000-20,000), sold with its original catalog from The Forum Gallery.
LCA is also excited to bring numerous contemporary ‘virgin’ artists’ work to auction for the first time. Artists, whose works have been shown in major galleries—some as long as 30 years—but have never seen the auction block, are up on iGavel.com. Included on the list are William Thompson, Lynda Evans, Mark McKee, Margaret Rosenberg, Bill Keating, Dick Jemison, Patrick Stone, Stephen Coyle, Jens Diercks and Sylvain Tremblay. Their works have been shown in galleries from Soho, NY to Newbury Street in Boston, and from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Palm Beach, Florida. And their art is eye-catching, astonishing, extremely accomplished and unmistakably New.
Below are several highlights from LCA’s March 26th through April 9th live auction on iGavel.com. Starting bids on iGavel are the reserve amount and all lots are available for first-hand inspection at LCA’s gallery in Litchfield, CT.
