News-Antique.com - Mar 12,2008 - Did you get your kicks on Route 66? For those of us who traveled the famous highway before the days of interstates, Route 66 represents the freedom we felt on those long trips across the country. It offered beautiful scenery, good food, and cheap motels. You stopped to eat a meal instead of driving through the parking lot. You took the time to chat with owners and other travelers. Some of them became friends if you stayed long enough in one place. You explored small towns and sometimes decided to stay a few days. Route 66 evokes memories of a less complicated time when you sometimes drove to just see
what you could find.
I recently traveled a stretch of it in Missouri and it doesn’t look much different to me than it did 45 years ago when I made my first cross country trip to California. Prices have
gone up but you can still find little motels to stay at and characters who are just itching to have a conversation with you. The nostalgia of the trip reminded me of just how
important the highway was to me and many other fellow travelers. This thought prompted me to include Route 66 in the Spring merchandise for Mama’s Bargain Shack.
