Disneyana collectibles are one of - but certainly not the only - focal points of the event. Among the many rare, high-grade Disney-themed items are movie posters, comic strip original art, pencil drawings and cels for Disney's 1930s cartoons, and Good Housekeeping original art pages by Disney artists. The auction also features a wide array of presidential campaign collectibles, comic books, comic book and comic strip original art, and many other categories.
This event, Hake's Americana Auction #193, follows a series of Hake's sales in which many price records for character collectibles have been broken. A matching giant promotional pair of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse dolls by Charlotte Clark from the 1930s sold in excess of $150,000 in their most recent auction. Additional record prices were recently obtained for comic book original art by famed illustrator Alex Toth; the first issue of the comic book Fantastic Four (their first appearance which inspired the hit film and four decades of Marvel comics); an original costume jacket from the pioneering science fiction television show Space Patrol, and political campaign buttons have all drawn overwhelming interest.
Western characters such as Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers, science fiction icons like Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and Tom Corbett, long-lived characters such as Betty Boop and Popeye, wrist watches from many different genres, movie posters and comic strip original art are among the other categories that have performed well in recent auctions thanks to their devoted followings of collectors.
To continue this trend, Hake's has lined up its best selection ever of rare Disneyana and other animation-related items to compliment their usual stellar selection of popular culture collectibles spanning over 200 years of American history.
Serious Disney enthusiasts will immediately spot the historic, only known copy of the 1927 theatrical poster from the cartoon short Great Guns featuring Walt Disney's early, pre-Mickey Mouse creation, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mickey himself is well-represented, highlighted by one of the rarest Mickey movie posters, the full-color, one-sheet for Mickey's Mellerdrammer (1933) a racially insensitive and rarely-seen takeoff on Uncle Tom's Cabin, with Mickey as Uncle Tom and Horace Horsecollar as Simon Legree.
