The first of my weekly Wall Wizard posts was very popular so I am extremely excited to be able to recommend and analyse another desirable and affordable work of art. I have also changed the title of this feature to ‘Affordable, Desirable and Collectible Artworks’ because I think that this title better reflects the purpose of the feature.
Who? The extremely talented, New Zealand born and New York based photographer Carlo Van de Roer who is represented by B-Hive gallery in New York and has won the following awards for his work: Art Directors Club Young Gun 2006, Print Magazine Award of Excellence 2006, Go Indie IPN 2007, 2007 APA Silver to Pixels/1st Place Fine Art, 2007 PIX digital Imaging Award.
What? A limited edition photograph from Van de Roer’s Swim series called Untitled (Astoria Park, Queens, New York). About this series of work Van de Roer has said “I am interested in the landscape as a recreational and social space. Swimming pools and the sea dominate much of my work, as I attempt to examine and reconnect with the environments that surrounded me growing up on the North Island of New Zealand. This series focuses on outdoor swimming pools and public baths — sites where the normally parallel spheres of social interaction and solitary communion with nature intersect. Viewed from above, patterns and groupings of people emerge, revealing their interactions both with each other and with their surroundings”.
Why? Other than the fact that this work makes a real impact, is visually spectacular, highly engaging and thought provoking it also has excellent investment potential. Van de Roer is a highly talented photographer who has received significant exposure through the work he has done for companies such as American Express, Kiehl’s and L’Oreal as well as having had his work included in major art and fashion magazines. Being represented by the prestigious photographers co-operative B-Hive in New York, having had his work used by major companies and having received awards for his work gives a good indication that Van de Roer has the potential and motivation to continue furthering his career thus increasing the demand and value of his work.
Where? This photograph can be purchased from the 20×200 gallery in three different sizes the smallest of which is 8.5″ by 11″ and is an edition of 200 priced at $20 each (yes, really), the medium print is 17″ by 22″ and is an edition of 20 priced at $200 each (best value) and the largest print is 30″x40″ and is an an edition of 2 priced at $2000 each. All the editions offered by 20×200 gallery are supervised by the artist and come with a certificate of authenticity that is signed and numbered by the artist (a good sign). I would personally go for the medium print because at $200 for a small edition of 20 it is extremely good value and is a good size.
