Yesterday, Christie's New York 20th Century Decorative Art & Design Department concluded its 2007 season of sales with a series of three auctions that stretched into the evening: Important Works of Art by Tiffany Studios, Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design, and Property from the Estate of Robin Roberts.
Combined, the three sales totaled $17.6 million, $3 million more than the highest pre-sale expectations - and notable lots included an Armand Albert Rateau armchair that fetched $2 million, a Tiffany Studios Fire Screen that sold for $1.67 million, and a Carlo Mollino M-1 lounge chair that realized $881,000.
Carolyn Pastel, specialist in charge of the sale, says: “An immensely successful sale this evening proved the continuing legacy of Robin Roberts and his unique taste and vision. Bidders from across the world, and with many from beyond our established 20th Century Decorative Art & Design client base, joined us to compete at a well-crafted and carefully-curated single owner sale. The $4.4 million total more than doubled our highest pre-sale expectations, and we now look forward to a further selection of works form the Robin Roberts Estate, to be offered at our inaugural Christie’s Interiors New York sale on January 15/16 2008.”
