DALLAS, TEXAS: Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries announces the opening of the public preview of historic Texana at the Great Hall in Fair Park. This will be Heritage's inaugural auction of Texana and includes a copy of the first book printed in Texas, Stephen F. Austin's 1829 Translations of the Laws, Orders, and Contracts, on Colonization , from January, 1821, up to this time.
"This auction contains many remarkable artifacts," said Sandra Palomino, Consignment Director for Heritage, "that document not just the history, but the very origin of the Lone Star State. Aside from Austin's Laws, we're also offering explorer and author Josiah Gregg's copy of Francis Moore's Map and Description of Texas , one of only three fully intact copies known to exist. This important association copy includes Gregg's journal with notes on a map of Texas he was working on."
Palomino continued, "This is a fabulous offering of historic manuscripts telling the story of Texas. We have an established Texas art division, and the opportunity to expand that platform to include rare books, maps, manuscripts and the many relics of Texas' past was a welcome challenge. Texas history is a personal passion of Steve Ivy's. Working with him on this auction has been an amazing learning experience. I believe that as the largest auction house founded in America, with a home base in Dallas, it is only logical that we want to expand an awareness and appreciation for Texas history."
