SOTHEBY’S HOLDS RECORD SALE OF 20TH CENTURY ITALIAN ART Tonight’s sale of 20th Century Italian Art, an annual sale held at Sotheby’s London since 1999, included works by some of the key Italian artists of the 20th century.
News-Antique.com - Oct 23,2007 - LONDON, OCTOBER 15, 2007 -- Tonight’s sale of 20th Century Italian Art, an annual sale held at
Sotheby’s London since 1999, included works by some of the key Italian artists of the 20th century,
including Marino Marini, Giorgio Morandi, Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni. The sale realised
£15,197,475 – well in excess of its high estimate, and a record for a sale of 20th Century Italian Art in
London. Seven new artist’s records were established, including one for Piero Manzoni, whose beautiful
Achrome from 1959, sold for £2,260,500.
Claudia Dwek, Co-Chairman of Sotheby’s Italy and one of the specialists in charge of the sale, said:
“Tonight’s results reflect the growing interest in Italian Art from around the world. Records were set for
masterpieces such as the Manzoni Achrome, and star lots including Fontana’s Concetto Spaziale were
recognised by international collectors. We are very happy with the result achieved for the Severini work
on paper entitled L’Autobus, a high point of Futurist Art. Tonight, there was also strong interest in Arte
Povera, with records set for Pistoletto and Boetti, and a work by Anselmo selling for almost double its
high estimate.”
