Trio of Photographs from the era of the Spanish-American War. Includes a large, 6.8” x 16.8” panoramic image of the USS Thomas army transport ship steaming off the coast, identified in negative as by J.D. Givens. Mounted, overall size 13.75” x 21.8”. Cracked mount edges, with chip out of left edge and large chunk out of top right, both far from image. Otherwise very good. With a 6.2” x 8.2” image looking down from a transport, showing a cavalry mount being lifted from [or lowered to] a landing craft, on a mount, ca. 7.3” x 9.6”. Two surface scrapes at lower right, including part out of that corner of photo, otherwise good. With a 4.75” x 6.75” photograph of the USS Michigan of the Quartermaster Department. Mounted, overall size 7” x 9”. Very good.
770 NAVY: U.S. CONSTITUTION, 1798 ($200-Up)
Partly-printed DS by merchant Jno. Bombeck, 1p, oblong 8vo, Boston, 9/14/1798. A receipt from Henry Jackson, US Naval Agent, for “Sixty eight Dollars and nine Cents in full for making Cartridge, an assiting [sic] the Gunner of the United States Frigate Constitution at the Castle...”Very good condition. The Constitution first set to sea just two months before this document, so apparently the Navy was just catching up with its bills. She patrolled the coast during the quasi-war with France, served in the War of 1812, and inspired the O.W. Holmes poem “Old Ironsides.” The Constitution still serves, and is the world’s oldest fully commissioned ship still afloat.
771 NAVY: USS CONSTITUTION? 1798 RECEIPT ($140-Up)
Partly-printed ADS by a Benj’n. K. Haggers, 1p, oblong 8vo, Boston, 9/21/1798, a receipt “of Henry Jackson, Naval Agent for the United States, at Boston, Three dollars and thirty cents in full for mending a Large ensign, and for three & half pounds of sheet lead...” Interestingly, bears receipt number 1. Fine. The USS Constitution did business with Haggers just days before this receipt, and the ensign in question may have been for that famous ship.

US Naval engineer (1870-1937). He writes a third-person ANS “Mr. Hobson”1p, 8vo, Hong Kong, June 30, 1899 “Mr. Hobson takes pleasure in complying with Miss Holloway’s request of May 1st...” In very good condition.
