American author, educator (1866-1938) and the first person to receive a PhD in English from the University of Chicago in 1894. Held many teaching posts at Chicago; Beautiful small ALS, Dec.19, 1923, “Would that I could write like W. J. to express my gratitude for this wonderful book...Ever gratefully yours, Edwin Herbert Lewis.” No wonder he was the first PhD!

710 PHELPS, EMMA HART LINCOLN ($65-Up)
Sister of Emma Hart Willard, Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps (1793-1884) was a pioneer American educator and strove to raise the standards of instruction for young women. An author as well, her subject was Botany; here in a 4 page ALS Mar 22, 1876, she fills almost every space, “I am glad there are a few women in the country who love and cultivate science,..Your accidents and trials have been severe, let us be thankful that your life has been spared and that you have escaped no greater injuries..” and signs “Almira Lincoln Phelps.” An excellent letter, traces of former mounting which affect nothing.

Percy Marks, American author, (1891-1956) ALS no place or date, writes “a young man at the University of Michigan asked me for my autograph. A week later I heard from him again. He had not read any of my books,..when he made his request, but he had read one since and therefore wished to return the autograph to me...Sincerely yours, Percy Marks.” Marks wrote “The Plastic Age” in 1926 about undergraduate life at Stanford, with gin and petting parties, and the book created a sensation, though not all positive.

A photograph album containing forty cabinet card Photographs of Texas A & M cadets, 1887 and 1888. The album is 16 x 7” with a metal clasp, outer wear, decorations in ivory type material, and with covers together but detached from the contents, easily repairable. The photographs, are in very good to fine condition, many with marks of various Bryan, Texas, photographers. Ink inscriptions on versos identify each cadet and his class, with a few faculty members also included. The album had belonged to Wilkes Knolle, a cadet whose picture is included. A rare example and likely to be sought
