French, last half of 19th Century, humorous subjects, three by Daumier (1808-1879) including “Hamlet” unfortunately water-stained at right, and two others by unidentified artists. Original, condition generally good.
76 HORSE FAIR - ROSA BONHEUR ($200-Up)
Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) spent a year and a half making sketches for this painting, dressed as a man to avoid attention. She managed to sell the painting for 40,000 francs to a dealer. The painting is 8’ by 16’, but this framed print is 25” x 38”, and the frame is a very handsome carved oak motif. After a three year American tour which delighted thousands, the painting was sold to A. T. Stewart, the department store magnate, and after his death in 1887, it was purchased
