R. Hoe & Co. was so named in 1822, its roots going back to 1805. The company was famous for its excellent printing presses, and remained in business until 1969. A portion of the business is still in existence. Here, an ALS, New York, Mar 26, 1847,“We acknowledge receipt of your favor of March 24th..for our Inking machine...& remain, R. Hoe & Co. Peter Hoe.”A very clear postmark verso, only a few months before the first U. S. postage stamps were offered for sale on July 1, 1847.
