A check drawn on the National Westminster Bank, payable to a Miss Walton in the amount of one penny. Accomplished by a secretary but signed by Fonteyn. Not cancelled. In fine condition. The amount suggests this was given as a souvenir.

American Revolutionary general (1728-1806); captured Burgoyne’s army at Saratoga; the focus of a drive to replace Washington as commander of the Continental Army; later, a merchant in Manhattan. Partly-printed ADS “Mr. Gates,”1p, 16mo, NYC, 12/1/1792. A receipt for hay purchased from him. With an incomplete ALS “Hoeratio Ga” [rest of signature missing]1/2p, 4to, [NY, 11/20/1778]. he tells Mr. John Mark of Shepperds Town, VA: “I shall be happy in return for this letter to hear that you and yours are in health, and that prosperity attends you.”Unfortunately the letter is not complete, with a seal hole at left and another piece out at right. Gates letters are not plentiful; the hay receipt was once in the Chase Money Museum!
