PAVLOVA AS A BACCHANT: ERNST OPPLER [3] ($40-Up)
Oppler (1867-1929) portrays Pavlowa as a Bacchant in the Russian Opera in Signed engraving No. 53/200, 17x13”. A second Signed also No. 53/200 of the Polovetzer Tanze, apparently with Karsavina and Vladimiroff, 17x 13” and a printed description in German. Some uneven toning and edge wear, but overall very good.
112 PERSONALITIES OF THE PAST: ENGRAVINGS [230] ($100-Up)
A trove of engravings, some prints of numerous famous names of history, else there would not be engravings. Included are many notables, among them Montagu, Earl of Sandwich (the inventor), Savanarola, Wilberforce, Raynal, Mytens, and images from European Magazine. There is some duplication, a few early engravings, most from 18th and 19th centuries. Very good condition, but with the occasional foxing, some soiling, but a good lot, and source of many hard-to-find images.

Part 17 of the set. A new and revised edition, 1894, by D. Appleton & Co., NY; this part starts with page 385 with an engraving of Lake George, and is titled ‘The South Shore of Lake Erie’ continuing with text and well printed views of Buffalo, Cleveland, Erie, Sandusky and a glance at Detroit, on page 408. Many great remembrances of days gone by, a little wear but in good condition.

115 REMEMBER THE MAINE! ($50-Up)
Handsome folk-art pencil drawing of the “Maine” battleship off Havana, with Moro Castle in the background. On Feb. 15, 1898, the forward gunpowder magazine exploded, and three quarters of the crew perished. This tragedy was blamed on the Spanish, and resulted in the Spanish American War. The piece is a wonderful example of patriotic folk art, and while there are tears, chips, and breaks, these can be repaired and a splendid piece will emerge. Size 14x18”, very fine.

1886. Providence, Rhode Island. #2479. $3000. Contributor to the Widows & Orphans Fund. A dozen vignettes of animals including a lion, eagle, beehive, grasshopper, butterfly, mule, fox, cow, bird, owl, horse and a ram. ABN. James G. Whitehouse founded this secret order that flourished for many years.
