(Amesbury, Mass) – Important works of art by listed American and European painters; formal American period furnishings; single-owner collections of Royal Worcester, English ceramics and Tobey jugs; and more will be sold at a massive three-session auction to be held July 26-28 by John McInnis Auctioneers. The sale will be held in the firm's galleries, at 76 Main Street in Amesbury.
“We typically hold our high-end auctions in June or July, and this will be no exception,” said John McInnis. “This sale is so big we had to plan it over the course of three days. Much of the merchandise is fresh to the market and has been pulled from several local estates in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. We will be selling over 1,000 lots. Mark your calendars, everybody.”
Session one will begin on Thursday evening, July 26, at 7 pm, and be dedicated entirely to artwork. Featured will be 19th- and 20th-century American and European paintings, watercolors, prints and works on paper. More than 200 lots will cross the block, representing dozens of listed artists from two continents and spanning two centuries. A few notables expected to draw intense bidder interest:
Anthony Thieme (Dutch-born American artist, 1888-1954) -- Thieme was born in Rotterdam, Holland, and studied in Holland, Italy and Germany before emigrating to the United States in 1920. He initially resided in New York, where he painted Broadway backdrops, but later set up studios in Rockport, Mass. (where he was a member of The Rockport School of artists) and St. Augustine, Fla., where he often wintered. A Rockport Street scene by Thieme will be sold (est. $5,000-$7,000).
Mariano Barbasan (Spanish-born Italian painter, 1864-1924) -- Barbasan studied and worked in Valencia, Madrid and Toledo in his native Spain before enrolling at the Spanish Academy of Rome, Italy, in 1889. He resided permanently in Italy thereafter. John McInnis Auctioneers is fortunate to have secured a consignment of his work, one that was recently discovered in a home in Maine. The oil-on-canvas depiction of a town square market is expected to bring between $40,000 and $60,000.
George Smith (British, 1870-1934) – An oil-on-canvas, titled “First Day of School,” is expected to realize $8,000-$12,000.
Session two will be held Friday, July 27, starting at 11 am. Featured will be 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century formal American, country, custom, continental and period furnishings; rugs; clocks; militaria; jewelry; porcelain; and sterling silver. The Friday session will be the most active, as over 500 items are slated to cross the block. Attendees can expect the festivities to last well into the evening.
