ONLINE BIDDING AND BURGUNDY SUCCESS AT CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK $2.56 MILLION EVENING WINE SALE A Case Of 1985 Romanée-Conti Fetches $237,000 - The Most Expensive Case Of Burgundy Sold At Auction. Christie’s LIVE™, Online Bidding Totals $243,281 –
News-Antique.com - May 24,2007 - New York - Yesterday’s The Evening Sale: Finest and Rarest Wines auction held at Christie’s New York was a resounding success, with the $2.56 million total exceeding the highest pre-sale expectations. The top lot of the sale was a case of 1985 Romanée-Conti that fetched $237,000, becoming the most expensive case of Burgundy ever-sold at auction.
As in November 2006, New York’s The Evening Sale: Finest and Rarest Wines utilized Christie’s LIVE™, the real-time, multi-media auction feature that allows clients to bid live from the comfort of their own home or office. Fifteen lots were sold online for a total of $237,000, including the second top lot of the sale, the mixed 2000 Bordeaux Grand Cru selection that fetched $154,050. Internet bidders joined the auction action from China, Japan, Hong Kong, Europe and the United States, successfully bidding on 10% of the sale.
From the beginning of the Fall 2007 season, Christie’s LIVE™ will be utilized across all seven saleroom sites in the International Wine Department network, from Los Angeles to Geneva.
Richard Brierley, Head of Wine Sales, Christie’s Americas, says: “Christie’s once again demonstrated its unequalled ability to generate international interest and competitive bidding for the most desirable wines. After overwhelmingly positive feedback from Christie’s LIVE™ bidders in this and last November’s Evening Sale, we look forward to the full introduction of this exciting new online bidding feature across the international wine network in Fall 2007, and for its London debut on June 7 at the Finest and Rarest Wines sale. Christie’s LIVE™ illustrates the potential to develop a global fine wine auction market, accessible by all wherever they may be.”
