Hirschfeld's Final Seinfeld TV Guide Artwork in Auction The original full-color caricature of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, drawn by the acclaimed Al Hirschfeld for the cover of TV Guide magazine, will be offered in a public auction.
News-Antique.com - May 15,2007 - (Dallas, TX) -- An original drawing for TV Guide magazine of superstar comedian Jerry Seinfeld by renowned celebrity caricaturist, Albert Hirschfeld, will be offered in a public auction in Dallas, Texas and online, June 14, 2007. The drawing was created for the final 1998 episode of the ground-breaking television series, "Seinfeld."
"TV Guide commissioned the world's greatest caricaturist, Al Hirschfeld, to commemorate the landmark Farewell Episode of 'Seinfeld,' one of the most popular and beloved shows on network television. He brilliantly created this four-color portrait of Jerry Seinfeld, and it appeared on the cover of TV Guide the week of May 9 - 15, 1998. The original artwork is signed by Hirschfeld, and the frame is autographed by Jerry Seinfeld," said Ed Jaster, Vice President of Heritage Auction Galleries (www.HA.com) of Dallas.
The cover depicting the drawing of Seinfeld was one of the top-selling issues of TV Guide that year.
"Most of Hirschfeld's caricature portraits were done in black and white, so this is a rare example of his original art in color. Plus there are the signatures of both the artist and the celebrity subject of the drawing," explained Jaster.
Entitled, "A Fond Farewell to Seinfeld, 1998," the mixed media-on-paper drawing is expected to sell for $30,000 to $40,000 as part of Heritage's Illustration Art Auction on June 14.
An internationally acclaimed artist for movie posters, Broadway playbills and celebrity caricatures, Hirschfeld was well known for hiding the name of his daughter, Nina, in his drawings. He died in 2003 at the age of 99.
