A new one-day intensive workshop, “Developing Connoisseurship: Not Just on the Mark,” led by Sarah Coffin, Curator of Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Decorative Arts and Head of the Product Design and Decorative Arts Department at Cooper-Hewitt, will concentrate primarily on ceramics, silver and decoration on woodwork, and provide participants with the opportunity to look closely at objects in the museum’s collection. Various aspects of object attribution will be examined, from adaptation and re-decoration of an old object at a later date, to the relevance of coloration, type of ceramic and technique in determining age and location of manufacture. Similarly, the style and technique of decoration and construction, as well as the relevance of gilding, with silver and other metalwork, will be explored. Methods and styles of japanning and inlay on and into woodwork also play a major role in determining whether something is restored or re-decorated. While marks will be examined and discussed, in many cases, the mark does not tell the whole story; in others, there is none. Benchmark pieces and examples of rarely-seen production will be available for close examination. A general knowledge of basic geographical and period styles and the appropriate use of marks on ceramics and silver is expected as a pre-requisite.
Participants in this course will gain a deeper understanding of:
