Polly Sartori, Sotheby’s expert of 19th Century European Art, said, “We are very pleased with the result of our spring auction, which was highlighted by a record price, which was broken twice today, for a work by the great 19th Century woman painter, Rosa Bonheur. As has been goal for several seasons, we worked to put together a sale that offersthe very best examples in our field. Our buyers have demonstrated that they want to focus on the high end of our market, and today we had much to offer them across all areas of the category. This quality was confirmed by an average lot value of $105,000. This auction was marked by unprecedented bidding by American private collectors, as noted in the
top ten highest prices paid today.”
