*Three 10” x 13” black-and-white photographs by Brett Weston (American, 1911-93). One is a glacial image, one is a coastal mountain scene and one is an oil spot. Born in Los Angeles the second son of noted photographer Edward Weston, Mr. Weston lived and worked for years in Mexico, where he was surrounded by revolutionary artists of the day, like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
*A cibachrome print by the portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz (American, b. 1949). The 14” x 14” image is of Paloma Picasso, the daughter of Pablo Picasso. Known mainly for her work in Rolling Stone, for whom she has worked for decades, Ms. Leibovitz was named chief photographer of the magazine in 1970. She photographed John Lennon for the cover on the morning of his murder.
The sale will also feature numerous antique Oriental items, a category for which Elder's has become renowned in recent years. “We'll be selling the best collection of Chinese cloisonne I've ever had,” Mr. Elder stated. Objects from the group include two 5-piece Qing Dynasty garniture sets; a pair of chicken-form lidded boxes; multiple pairs of horses and oxen; and a large-scale rhinoceros.
Also to be sold will be period Chinese porcelains; Peking glass; Japanese and Chinese Imari; an outstanding Japanese Satsumi Yaki earthenware footed dragon vase; Fukagawa and Koransha Imari porcelain items; a Sumi Dagawa pitcher; Chinese Tang Dynasty camel and earth spirit; groups of Chinese and Japanese carved ivory figures; and three large Chinese famille verte guardian figures.
From the Exports category, items include Rose Medallion and Rose Canton, and an 18th century Chinese Mandarin hunting bowl. The sale will also feature nice European bronzes. “What I want to instill in people is that we are offering high-end merchandise in two very hot categories – Oriental antiques and fine art,” Mr. Elder said. “This is quite possibly the best sale I've ever had.”
