On Saturday, January 27, 2007, a worldwide audience of prospective bidders vied for the opportunity to acquire a rare 1929 Hugh Ferris rendering of the famed New York City iconic Chrysler Building.
Antiques and Estate Auctioneers gallery at 44777 St. Rt. 18 E., Wellington, OH was the site of the auction which also featured internet bidding, telephone bidders and the live audience of bidders. According to John Farkas, auctioneer, “the audience interest was high and there was an electric excitement in the air as the bidding for lot 100 drew near.”
The print, which was signed by Walter P. Chrysler, architect William Van Allen, Frank B Rogers, the building’s project manager, as well as other officials and dignitaries, had pre-auction estimates of $8,000-$10,000. When the item came up for bid, there were live gallery bids, telephone bids, and internet bidders, and the price quickly surpassed the estimates. When the hammer fell on the piece, the winning bid was $14,950 and the new owner of the piece is the Chrysler Museum of Art.
According to Bill Hennessey, the Director of the museum, “the Chrysler Museum of Art, which is located at 245 W.Olney Rd, in Norfolk, VA, was founded by Walter P. Chrysler Jr. and the museum maintains a close relationship with the Chrysler family to this day. When we heard that this piece was available, we determined that we would be interested in acquiring it, as it is their building, and now the print will be with the family.”
