Owens Sad Iron Collection includes more than 260 irons, most from the 19th and early 20th century, and 60-plus trivets. The collection encompasses sad irons, fluters, goffering irons, charcoal, and box irons, as well as two unusual electric irons.
Some highlights of the collection, which includes items from countries around the world, are:
• The E.P. Holly Fluting iron with slug from 1873. This a rare, highly sought-after piece
• The Original Knox Fluter, in excellent condition, with even a picture of its inventor, Mrs. Knox on its base, from 1877
• The New Plus Ultra Coke Iron, wihch has smoke stacks at each end
"The collection tells a fascinating story about history and culture, and specifically about the evolution of housework, clothes and their care," explained owner John T. Owens, a lifelong antiques enthusiast. "There is so much here to interest a wide range of collectors, dealers, and museums that I believe that the collection should go not as individual pieces, but as one lot."
With that in mind, Mr. Owens has quoted an asking price of $6500 for the complete 300-plus-piece collection.
