Rare antique gold coin brooch. A very rare hand made solid gold coin brooch made with two 'Indian Head type 3' one dollar gold pieces from 1856 and 1857 and one English gold sovereign coin from 1871 is now on sale!
News-Antique.com - Nov 30,-0001 - As someone who prefers low key holidays, this past Father's day was no exception. Rather than have a celebration, my preference was to use the day for visiting local garage sales with my wife and daughter-in-law. Sunday is not the best day for the greatest selection but it is a great time for bargains. People are highly motivated to get rid of what they have and not have to re-pack. At one place I found a trove of old sheet music with great songs from the twenties through the fifties including some of the songs I remember well as a young teenager in my home town. There was even a copy of the theme song for the Disney TV show and movie 'Davy Crockett' which was a huge hit when I was growing up, and a rare find! There was also a large basket of costume jewelry with mostly not very interesting pieces but my wife began to sort through them and put some pieces in a bag along with some other odds and ends. We made a deal with the lady and then went on to other sales. It was a pleasant way to spend Father's day. When I got home and started cleaning the various jewelry items I noticed an unusual looking brooch which looked like gold coins soldered together. Upon looking closer I realized this was not costume jewelry but the real thing! It was a brooch made of two 'Indian Head type 3' one dollar gold pieces from 1856 and 1857 and one English gold sovereign coin from 1871 in the center. The Sovereign is the coin most associated with the date 1871 (coin of the year) in coin collector circles. The sovereign had been smoothed out and the intitials 'CA' or 'AC' engraved on the front. On the back was the date and a 'young head queen victoria' engraving. This brooch was probably made in the mid to late 19th century when the coins were common as legal tender and at a time before the standardization of currency in the U.S.
I discovered a beautiful brooch, a fantastic piece of American history and a real treasure, and oh what a wonderful Father's day gift!
