The 2006 Winterthur Museum Study Trip, focusing on Advanced Connoisseurship of American Fine and Decorative Arts: Arts of the Pennsylvania Germans will feature a series of lectures, workshops, and connoisseurship tours. The Pennsylvania German collection is one of the centerpieces of Winterthur’s collection, and Winterthur has been a pioneer in the scientific examination of frakturs in particular, making this a very special study trip this year. The program, which will be limited to 30 participants, will take place in Winterthur’s seminar and period rooms. Schedule subject to change.

Lecture: “Pennsylvania German Painted Furniture”
Speaker: Charles Hummel, Curator Emeritus & Adjunct Professor, Winterthur For approximately 100 years from 1744 to 1840, Pennsylvania German craftsmen created an incredible variety of beautiful and functional painted furniture. This talk concentrates on blanket chests, but will also illustrate bedsteads, desks and bookcases, cupboards, and boxes.

Lecture: “Fraktur as Art and Artifice” Speaker: Lisa Minardi, McNeil Curatorial Intern, Winterthur This lecture will focus on the history and cultural context of fraktur, with discussion of the various regions, religious groups, and artists.

1. Workshop: Pennsylvania German Furniture Construction with Wendy Cooper, Lois F. and Henry S. McNeil Senior Curator of Furniture, Winterthur; and Charles Hummel, Curator Emeritus & Adjunct Professor, Winterthur
2. Workshop: Pigments on Paper and Wood with Dr. Jennifer Mass, Senior Scientist, Scientific Research and Analysis Laboratory, Winterthur. This workshop will include a review of the pigments that were used by the Pennsylvania Germans to produce the brightly colored fraktur and painted furniture. The instrumental methods of analysis used to identify Pennsylvania German pigments and other painting materials will also be discussed and demonstrated.
3. Workshop: Fraktur with Lisa Minardi, McNeil Curatorial Intern, Winterthur; examination of different types of fraktur, focusing on identification and evaluation
