rose to $4,400. The 64” tall piece was purchased by an Indiana phone bidder. Also, a working mahogany inlaid case Regina music box, double comb, with five 5.5” discs, played a nice tune for a South Georgia collector at $3,300.
Period furniture dominated the day’s proceedings. Pieces that did well included a pair of John Henry Belter rosewood armchairs in the Rosedale pattern (circa 1850). An absentee bidder from Ohio was the winner, paying $7,150. Also, a German inlay Bombay chest (circa 1800, 39” h x 48” w) sold in the room for $4,620.
A Southern cherry sugar chest with curly maple inlay on turned tapered legs, with dovetail case (circa 1820) made an in-house bidder happy for $5,500. The 37” h x 23” w chest is probably from the Piedmont region. Also, a 19th century Verni Martin center table, artist signed with hand-painted scenes (circa 1870), garnered a top bid of $2,200.
The star of the fine art group was a 19th century oil on canvas by the French artist Fabius Germain Brest (1823-1900), titled “Sunset Landscape.” A determined bidder in the room took it home for $2,530, a bargain considering works by Brest have brought up to $175,000. The 13” x 19” work was signed by Brest and was housed in a period frame.
