COMMENT: Deborah Coy, Head of the 19th Century European Art Department says, “Today’s results, and our world record price for a recently rediscovered work by Gustav Bauernfeind, confirm the continued health of the market for 19th Century European Art. As the only auction house offering a separate Orientalist sale, we are particularly thrilled with the strong prices achieved in this category, as works consistently drew prices above pre-sale estimates with active bidding from all corners of the globe. My colleagues and I are now looking ahead to continued success on Monday with two extraordinary sales: Property from the Collection of Charles R. Crane, an unparalleled private collection of 19th century European, Orientalist, and Russian art, and Russian Paintings & Works of Art, Christie's first-ever combined sale of Russian pictures and works of art in New York.”
