News-Antique.com - Nov 30,-0001 - A provincial auctioneer, John Dickins, in Buckingham, England celebrated in September 2004 when he sold an ebony mantel clock by famous British designer, C F A Voysey (1857-1941), for £72,000. Imagine his excitement when a second Voysey clock was consigned to his saleroom a year later. The owner had seen a similar clock to his when he visited the V&A Museum in London and had looked on the internet and read about the sale at John Dickins’ auction.
This second timepiece stood 20in high and had painted decoration with birds, a river and boats with a banner reading Time and Tide Wait for No Man. Furthermore, this clock turned out to be the very one illustrated in an 1896 volume of The Studio.
Despite some damage and restoration, the clock sold on March 11 for £141,000 to a private UK Voysey collector. Both auctioneer and the owner were delighted.
Charles Francis Annesley Voysey exhibited with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1888. Voysey was a highly talented designer in the decorative arts which included magazine covers for The Studio; wallpapers for Jeffrey & Co and Essex & Co; tiles for Pilkington and Minton and carpets sold through Liberty. During the 1880s he also produced furniture designs, clocks, tablewares, metalwork and lighting.
