Popular Discontinued Pattern in Stock at Replacements.com Through a special purchase, Replacements, Ltd. has acquired a great selection of pieces in this marvelous, sea-themed pattern, Mottahedeh Torquay Blue.
News-Antique.com - Nov 30,-0001 - We are very excited to announce that Replacements, LTD. has received a large shipment of pieces from the very popular “Torquay-Blue” pattern by Mottahedeh China. Although this pattern was discontinued in 2001, through a special purchase, Replacements, Ltd. has acquired a great selection of pieces in this marvelous, sea-themed pattern. “Torquay-Blue” features an extraordinary seashell and sea grass design in brilliant cobalt blue. The pieces are finished with a scalloped border and accented with matte gold trim. The effect created by the combination of decoration, color, trim, and shape is striking, and, as we’ve noted before, this is another pattern you’ll not find sold in bulk at the home store chains. The name “Torquay” is a reference to the seaside town of Torquay, Devon, located on England’s southern coast. Originally founded as a monastic town, Torquay’s viability seemed in doubt with the announcement of the dissolution acts of King Henry VIII in 1539, which were instituted by Henry to sever England from Catholicism and form the Anglican Church. Torquay survived though, and later became a popular resort town due to the fact that the French Revolution and the resulting continental Napoleonic conquests caused many wealthy and elite to fear travel through continental Europe. The harbors on the Torbay coast, as the region was known, also fostered a lively black market for smuggled French Brandy! The original “Torquay” pattern design was produced around 1820 by the Swansea potters, and later adapted by Mottahedeh. The Mottahedeh China Company was founded by famed dinnerware connoisseur and collector Mildred R. Mottahedeh. The company dedicated itself to producing designs adapted from famous antiques, and “Torquay” was one of the patterns selected for production. This unique and noble pursuit of famous antique design made Mottahedeh immensely popular, and many of their designs are highly sought after. (In addition to the popular “Torquay-Blue” pattern, Mottahedeh also produces the famed “Tobacco Leaf” pattern as well as “Duke of Gloucester,” “Famille-Verte,” and “Summer Fruit.”) Replacements, Ltd., carries a wide variety of pieces in “Torquay-Blue” including the traditional 5-piece place setting, cereal bowls, soup bowls, creamers, sugar bowls, vegetable bowls, salad serving bowls, and tureens. We also carry “Torquay-Green”, and offer both patterns in versions without gold trim. Start at the link below to browse and order in these unique patterns.
