South Kensington – The popular annual Costume and Textiles including 20th Century Fashion
sale on 29 September 2005 is a must for fashion devotees searching for vintage clothes and
accessories in excellent condition at good value prices. Featuring pieces by established designers
such as Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior, Ossie Clark and Biba, as well as classic
designers of the earlier 20th century such as Balenciaga, Chanel and Paul Poiret, estimates start from
as little as £100.
A beautiful collection of vintage creations from the private collection of the former Swedish model
Ms Ulla Carenby leads the sale. From 1967 to the mid 1970s Ms Carenby modelled for, among
other designers, Yves Saint Laurent and was his favourite model and also a close friend.
Including examples of both Haute Couture and Pret à Porter, the collection includes a beautiful
selection of clothes and accessories by classic designers such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Pierre Cardin,
Pucci and of course, Yves Saint Laurent (estimates range from £50 to £1,000). The former Swedish
top model was presented with many of the pieces by several of the famous fashion houses. They
have remained in impeccable condition, with many never worn and still in original boxes and covers.
Amongst highlights from the collection includes the classic Yves Saint Laurent smoking suit for
women which the designer created in 1966 and has inspired many creations since (estimate: £400-
600) and a beautiful selection of shoes by shoe designer Roger Vivier, who pioneered the stiletto and
platform and whose shoes are described as "the Faberge of footwear" (estimate: £500-1,000).
The sale will also offer a second chance to acquire high fashion from the wardrobe of the Parisian
socialite, Mme Mona Ayoub. Over 30 Chanel outfits will be offered with estimates from £200 up to
£1,000, including evening gowns, silky soft leather jackets and key note Chanel day wear, with
matching accessories. Mme Ayoub's wardrobe also includes Jean Paul Gaultier, Gucci, Dolce &
Gabbana and John Galliano.
A beautiful selection of over 14 Kelly handbags by Hermes highlights the accessories section of the
sale. From red crocodile skin to classic brown leather, estimates range from £400 to £4,000.
