News-Antique.com - Nov 30,-0001 - An eBay Power Seller from Ohio recently sold a bronze Art Nouveau figure by French sculptor Agathon Leonard. This sculpture, estimated to have been produced in 1900, is modeled after famed dancer Loie Fuller.
Agathon Leonard, born in 1841, was best known for his Art Nouveau bronze sculptures. The piece, part of La Danse de l’Escharpe, (translation: The Scarf Dance) was originally introduced as a table centerpiece at the 1900 World Fair at the Pavillon de Sevres in France.
The figure is 17" tall and 13.5" wide, and has retained its original patina and gold gilt. It is in near perfect condition. The sculpture depicts a dancer in a flowing gown with a billowing scarf above her head. The figure is signed A. Leonard, and the foundry mark is Susse Freres Paris.
eBay users began bidding on the piece on April 12th, which started with an opening bid of only $.02. Recognizing that this was a rare and very valuable item, and in great condition, the price quickly escalated. Seventeen bids were placed during the 10-day auction. The auction closed April 22nd with a winning bid of $12,076.
The seller provided seven photos, including close-ups from various angles. With rare items such as this, photography plays a key role in determining the outcome of the listing.
