msterdam (D) We’ll meet up on Saturday evening (following travel day on March 10) and enjoy welcome dinner together at a local restaurant
Sunday, March 12:
Amsterdam (B/L/D) We’ll start with a sightseeing tour of the city; as Amsterdam is a compact city with many small streets, we will have our sightseeing tour on foot, enjoying the many small streets and out of the way places
■ Lunch will be on board a canal boat while cruising the canals and harbor of the city
■ In the afternoon we will continue to the Rijksmuseum for a guided tour of the collection, and will conclude the day with a visit to the Van Gogh Museum
■ In the evening we will enjoy dinner in a local restaurant
Monday, March 13:
The Hague (B/L) We will depart for a motorcoach tour of the city featuring the architecture outside of the central ring of canals; we’ll travel by the Zaanstraat to view works by De Klerk, the Scheepvaarthuis, and see the new developments of Borneo and KNSM island; the garden city concept, originating in England, was introduced into Amsterdam by socialist counselors such as Wibaut and De Miranda; these ideas were given shape in various areas of the city, including Betondorp (Concrete Village) which we will pass by en route to The Hague
■ We will continue in the direction of Delft, where we will have a walking tour of the city highlighting the life of the Delft artist Johannes Vermeer, tracing the various spots in the city which can be attributed to Vermeer and his family
■ Afterwards we will have lunch in a local restaurant
■ In the afternoon, we will continue to the residence of the American Ambassador for a tour of the art collection which is part of the Art in Embassies Program
■ Afterwards, we will visit one of The Netherlands leading contempory art collections
■ And return to Amsterdam for an evening at leisure
Tuesday, March 14:
Amsterdam/Apeldoorn (B/L) We’ll begin with a morning departure to the town of Leiden for a visit to one of the exhibitions in this commemorative year about the birth of Rembrandt; here we will see the exhibition Rembrandt’s Mother, Myth and Reality which explores the 19th-century myths around Rembrandt’s family; scientists identified numerous figures in his work as his father, mother, sister Liesbeth or uncle Adriaan—myth or reality—this is the issue that this exhibition addresses ■ Afterwards we’ll continue to the beautiful Vecht River; this area was a favorite among the wealthy from Amsterdam who built their summer mansions here in the 17th and 18th centuries, and a number of castles in the area indicate that the Vecht River was once the border between the provinces of Utrecht and Holland
■ Here we will board a private boat for lunch as we sail past some of these beautiful mansions
■ After lunch, we will visit one of the private houses along the river before continuing to Apeldoorn
