Afternoon visit to The 40th Irish Antique Dealers’ Fair with Mr. George Stacpoole, President of the Irish Antiques Dealers Association. This annual exhibition is the only exhibition to take place in Ireland represented by official members of the Irish Antique Dealers Association, and offers an exciting opportunity to see Ireland's finest antique dealers under one roof. We’ll catch the fair on closing day ■
Dinner at Eden Restaurant, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, one of the original Slow Food restaurants. Founded by Carlo Petrini in Italy in 1986, Slow Food is an international association that promotes food and wine culture, but also defends food and agricultural biodiversity worldwide.
Monday, October 3: Dublin
Our day will start with a private tour of Trinity College, where Dr. Edward McParland, Dept. of History of Art and Architecture, and author of numerous publications on Dublin architecture, will take us behind-the-scenes through buildings not normally open to the public and to see the Book of Kells
■ Private tour of the Provost’s House in Trinity, one of the most beautiful 18th-cenury town houses in Dublin, built and decorated for lavish entertainment
■ Walking tour of the Georgian squares of Dublin, including a walk about in Merrion Square
■ Lunch at a local restaurant
■ Afternoon visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Marsh’s Library, where the director, Muriel McCarthy, will give us a talk on the library and show us some of this very important collection contained in this intact library dating from the 17th-century
■ Afternoon drive through Phoenix Park the largest enclosed park in Europe
■ Free evening for theatre or concert.
Tuesday, October 4: Dublin & Wicklow
We’ll begin our day with a visit to Helen Dillon’s Garden, where Helen and her husband, Val Dillon, a foremost antiques dealer, will meet with us
■ We’ll continue on to the Chester Beatty Library
■ Lunch at leisure
■ After lunch, we’ll visit Powerscourt Estate, formerly the home of the Earls of Powerscourt, and the last of the great formal estates in Ireland
■ Dinner this evening with John and Miriam de Vere Whyte, Whyte’s Auctionneers and Valuers; preceded by a talk by John on Irish Art including recent sales, what to look for, etc.
Wednesday, October 5: Dublin & Leixlip
Our day begins with a private tour of the Irish paintings in the National Gallery, led by Adrian le Harival, Curator of the English and Dutch collections
■ Private tour of the magnificent Casino Marino, a neo classical “Temple to the Arts,” designed by Sir William Chambers
■ Optional walk at the nearby James Joyce Centre on your own
■ Visit to the Craft Centre at the Tower in Pearse Street, where we will see examples of work in glass, ceramics, applied textile
