CULT CLASSICS AND MOVIE LEGENDS STAR AT CHRISTIE’S FILM AND
ENTERTAINMENT SALE
Film and Entertainment Memorabilia Including Vintage Film Posters
June 16, 2005
New York—Christie’s offers its bi-annual star-studded sale of Film and Entertainment Memorabilia
Including Vintage Film Posters in New York on June 16, 2005. Film highlights range from cult classics
to recent favorites with props from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Star Wars, to personal
ephemera from acting legends James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. Film posters comprise over 80 lots
in the sale and another 16 lots have been donated by Kim Basinger to benefit the charity P.A.W.S.
The sale leads with iconic props, including a bullwhip used in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
(estimate: $8,000-12,000), with a signed note from Harrison Ford. The bullwhip is being sold on
behalf of the charity, Friends In Deed, an organization providing support to the victims and family
of anyone suffering from HIV/AIDS, cancer or other life threatening diseases. Other film prop
favorites include a Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet prototype (estimate: $4,000-6,000), one of around
five prototypes made in 1976 for the first Star Wars series. An extremely rare Star Wars prop will
also be included — a light saber made by a prop master at Industrial Light and Magic, originally
made in 2001 for a charity auction to benefit the September 11th Children’s Fund (estimate: $8,000-
12,000).
A strong awards category includes two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe. An Oscar statuette
awarded to the acclaimed special effects pioneer, John P. Fulton, for Outstanding Special
Photographic Effects in the Wonder Man, 1945, is being offered (estimate: $50,000-70,000). Fulton
worked with the industry’s top directors and contributed to horror classics such as Frankenstein, and
Hitchcock’s Rear Window, and is best remembered for inventing techniques that made Claude Rains
invisible in The Invisible Man. The other Oscar included in the sale was awarded to Art Director,
Richard Day, for Best Black-And-White Art Direction for This Above All, 1942. Richard Day was
one of the most prolific and honored art directors in the industry, working on over 250 films, and
earning two Oscars. A Golden Globe awarded to Steve McQueen for World Film Favorite, 1969 is
the second and last award the actor ever won (estimate: $10,000-15,000).
The auction offers a strong selection of personal ephemeral from Hollywood legends. Highlights
include a rare 1949 high-school year book signed twice by James Dean (estimate: $5,000-7,000), and
an early letter from Marilyn Monroe to her half-sister, Bernice. Bearing the very rare signature,
Norma Jeanne, the letter gives insight into her strained family relationships and her sense of wit at her
burgeoning celebrity status (estimate: $20,000-30,000). A fascinating collection of letters,
illustrations and signed photographs from the collection of the late Director Fred Zinnemann
includes correspondence from Audrey Hepburn, 1958- 1960, following their work together on A
Nun’s Story (estimate: $6,000-8,000).
